Mutts You Can’t Resist

Whenever I see a Gretsch Electromatic Junior Jet on the “used” rack, I have to pick it up and play it. I don’t need one, I probably don’t have space for one, I don’t play short scales, there’s the whole “not humbuckers” mess, I don’t like how they balance in my lap, etc. etc. etc… but I’m drawn to the little buggers for some reason, and if I ever see one priced under the “requires spousal approval” threshold, it’s probably coming home with me. (The one at the local GC last weekend was a close call.)

Anyone else have a bass that they’re irrationally obsessed with? The more mutt-like, the better!

Those Steinberger/Hohner headless "cricket bat" basses get me like that. They're in no way similar to anything else I like aesthetically, they hang all wrong on a strap, my forearm doesn't know what to do (bad habit or not - I''m a 'rest on the body' sort of bloke ) the back of the neck's all glossy, etc. etc....
Back in the days when I got to music shops regularly though, I always tried one if they had one, in the vain hope that it would all magically be different., but.... no.
Last time was a few months back when I had a go on someone else's at an open mic night, but... no.

Still, who knows, one of these days! I can totally see me getting one, if only to prop it safely against a wall or take it for journeys on public transport to revel in its stability and portability!

Obsession is never rational. Just get it. And sell something else (that you "should" use, but probably don't).
Being emotionally drawn to an instrument is, IMO, much more important than specifications.

I get that 100%… when I was a kid, the Cort version of that bass was in the Sears Christmas Catalog, and I wanted one SO MUCH - even though I hadn’t started playing bass yet! Mom/Dad/Santa never got the memo…

Not sure how "mutt-like" you would consider a T-bird or a Jack Cassady but those are the non-FSO axes that get away with some functional flaws because I dig the vibe they give off. I've had a T-bird in the quiver since shortly after I started playing but the JC is still on the "someday" list.

I don’t know if any of these qualify as “mutt-like” but if I ever stumble across one of these in good condition at a reasonable price, I’m grabbing it
