MXR bass octaver technical difficulties

About a month ago, I purchased an MXR bass octave deluxe pedal. I seem to be encountering some problems with it while playing along the G string from approx. the 1st to 7th frets.

I tried the pedal with my 4 basses:
MM stingray
Fender Jazz
P bass
Carlo Robelli

With each bass plugged in, the problem is the same. The tracking seems to glitch in those same exact spots. I've read that these are the most common areas to find dead spots along a bass, and an octave pedal will let you know any defects in your bass set up very easily. I suspect this may be the case, however the thought of possibly having a defective pedal has crossed my mind nevertheless.

Has anyone had similar experiences with this pedal? Might a thorough, professional set-up help remedy this problem? The tracking glitch is really limiting my use of the pedal, since I often like to let notes ring out and this is made impossible by the fuzzy/glitchy in-and-out effect that the pedal seems to be producing along the aforementioned frets.

a side note: I am a complete effects n00b(incase it isn't already obvious enough)this is one of my first pedals..after 10 years of playing bass

any comments/tips regarding this problem will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul

Mine will glitch out on my on the 6th and 7th fret on the G string on every fretted bass I've used (harmonics issue, IIRC) but I don't have any glitching on my fretless. Positions 1-3, however, seems a bit excessive. Did you drop it or push a crazy hot signal into it? Have you tried another BOD?
