MXR M-80 vs. Tech 21 VT Bass

TL5: You could definitely do that, but now you're adding another device to your signal chain. Using a more appropriate power amp would be a simpler and likely less expensive solution if you didn't already own a power amp. Your solution would work great if you had a power amp with high input sensitivity that the VT couldn't fully drive.

Eublet: For my tone goals, when I was using the VT as the sole preamp, running the drive control at 9 was about the maximum I liked to use. Any more than that and the added harmonic content started pushing the upper-mids too far forward for my taste, even with the character knob turned off. If you were using a Crown XLS Drivecore, which has 1.4V input sensitivity, and kept the drive control down like I preferred (if I recall correctly, JimmyM uses his with the drive control turned off completely), you might run out of gas at the front end of the power amp. Using something with 1.0V or lower input sensitivity would allow you to use whatever settings you wanted on the VT and still have enough output with just the level control to get the job done. This is important with this pedal given how interactive everything is with one another. Also, please keep in mind that this is purely speculative on my end as all I've done is compare the output spec of the VT to the input spec of the XLS drivecore. I was not able to try this combination out in the real world, which might tell a wildly different story than the specs.

Yup, the M-80 is not a very interesting sounding pedal. I own them both, and the VT kills it in pretty much every way. If the VT had the M-80's channel switching and DI, it would be the ultimate stomp-box pre (IMO, of course). The Deluxe is gonna be amazing!

actually silky, i run mine with the drive up about halfway most of the time, though i have used it as a clean pre to rescue crap backline rigs i've gotten.

Hey Jimmy, you seem to be the world's foremost authority on the VT... :)

Have you compared it to the Catalinbread SFT or the EBS ValveDrive? I'm not particularly looking for an Ampeg sound-alike, I just want to be able to get a convincing tubey on-the-edge-of-breakup feel.

nope, never used either one of those pedals. when i find a pedal that works for me, i stick with it usually, so never tried either. however, if you're not interested in ampeg tone, i don't think the vt or sft would be up your alley.

after a little more time with my VT.....I've found that the dynamic spectrum is slightly limited.

My main goal was to get a nice semi-clean to slightly overdriven tone........AND a good heavily overdriven tone.

I've got the gain control over noon......while I understand that lower gain settings can achieve some of this desire.

....sady the volume dynamics and gain dynamics just aren't similar to a real tube amp.

Great tones....but not dynamic to pick attack......

well yeah, it's a $150 pedal, not a $2000 tube amp ;) gotta expect that kind of stuff.

the M-80 is a good box. It does everything MXR says it will and it does a good job of it. What if I don't want all Ampeg all the time??

I agree, it does everything that it's supposed to pretty well. The distortion is very specific, so you just have to blend it in right. The DI is great, I've played gigs where the soundguys complimented me on my DI'd tone using the preamp on the M-80.
