My guitarist has this pedal laying around his house. He offerred to sell it to me cheap. Does anybody have any experiences using this pedal for bass? If it’s possible to get a warm overdrive tone with no loss of low frequencies, then I may go for it.
Well, I ended up trying out the pedal on my rig. In my opinion, this is not a good pedal for bass. No matter how you have the pedal set, it sucks out a ton of your lows. However, the gain structure was nice sounding. It would maybe sound good for a garage band-style sound.
It might work great in a biamped set up (specifically, just feeding the highs through it, while running your lows clean), but otherwise, I'd say no (speaking as a former owner of an original MXR Distortion Plus).
I also had this pedal but I never actually liked it because of the low-end loss. A couple of days ago a friend gave me a cheap 7 band bass eq which made me realize the distortion works really well if you eq it. And with the help of the good ol’ boss oc-3 It sounds pretty cool.
