MXR M80 Bass DI + Problem

So I picked up a MXR M80 DI for a great deal. I use a few Spector Rebops with the Standard Tonepump circuit and a passive P bass. However, when using the unit it sounds as if I am clipping the input on it. The distorted signal is alot more noticeable when I play in the lower register. I tried this infront of my SVT 7 and into my maudio unit for recording with identical results. Has anyone else had this issue with the M80?

check the colour switch(if engaged,it WILL boost lows, cut mids and add volume),check the distortion channel switch(could be broken or sthng)...can't think of anything else really...the only problem i had with m80 is that on the first one i bought, volume was set too high-around 1 o'clock my sound eng. was going deff-and on this one i own now(first one fried couple of years ago)-volume is a bit low-i have to set it around 3 o'clock to get solid sound in the PA.otherwise, hell o' a pedal...always on for me...
