MXR m87 compressor giving to much sustain for me ?

My mxr bass compressor is a great wee pedal , but just one thing is getting to me about it at the moment I'm getting far to much sustain that i do not want is there a way to dial this out by increasing or decreasing the attack or release?

Or maybe by playing shorter notes? But yeah, release time may be too long, ratio may be too high, treshold/input may be too low.

Yes. But input gain/threshold combination is the key. When your signal is hot and threshold is low it sounds like a looooooooong sustain, especially with a high ratio value, because it makes "head gain" of every note close to its "tail".
