I guess I'm a nostalgic fool... My SX Ursa 1 LH is the 1st bass guitar I ever owned.
It was the bass I wanted before I knew what I wanted, which is probably a familiar
story. Well, as I progressed, this poor bass geetar became less used, mostly because
of a bowed neck the truss rod couldn't come close to straightening, so with SD vintage
pick ups and new pots and shielding in it, I put it in it's body bag, knowing it would
never fetch close to its perceived worth. (My SX CAR Ursa 1... center stage)
A couple of months ago, in my guilt over abandoning my 1st true bass, I decided
to order a new Warmoth neck for it... so I could play it once again. Got a satin
finished maple/maple neck and some Gotoh tuners, neck arrived about 2 weeks ago,
and I went to the lab to bring new life to a dead friend.
The folks at Warmoth really deserve more than just an honorable mention. The
new neck is beautiful, just needed to remove the satin off the frets and a little
polish and that neck was ready to go. (Nut needed very minor filing...) I am
Very impressed with the work they did. The new 21 fret jazz neck replaced a 20 fret.
Pocket needed to be widened about a 1/16 of an inch, and a shim was needed
to get the neck right. The end result is fantastic... I'm probably going to replace the bridge
and it needs new strings, but still, what a difference... Neck is faster, sustain is longer,
sounds brighter, weight is about the same, but the neck dive has lessened. And that Maple is just sexy!
The old Precision neck is bowed .025 inches with no truss rod tension. The
truss rod won't straighten it with strings on it. Iffin' anyone wants to salvage it,
they can have it for shipping cost from Florida.
Oh.... the Frankenstein is a removeable vinyl... a little fun for the next time
I get to my friends' to 'jam'. Having a crafty wife with techie toys is a good thing!
