Hmm...If you have low end with both pickups on full, it isn't out of phase. Listening to the clip you provided, I have to say that the clip sounds great to me. If you don't like that tone, then maybe a jazz bass just isn't for you.

No I agree, this clip sounds great. I just wanted you guys to have a taste of the mid thickness I am dealing with in general when playing it. If I had a good mic I would record it for you but unfortunately I would have to contact my friend who owns a studio for that.
Anyways, I will fiddle a bit with different strings and I will first bring it to a luthier shop to have the bass completely set up, frets polished and all that jazz. And I will ask him to replace the original nut with a bone nut. It really helps. Then we will see.

try lowering your pickups. or switch the pickups back to the originals. if you dont like the poles sticking through the covers, you can put a shim underneath the covers between the top of the flatwork and the cover. those pickups have less mid girth.
The sound you describe would lead me to see if the 2 pickups were wired in series instead of parallel.

You would know for sure because the blend wouldn't work.
Try Tru bass nylon tape wounds maybe? They are very "rounded" sounding to my ears.
Thanks guys. I have already tried lowering the pickups and it worked already although I then had problems with definition obviously. Right now, my pickups are 5mm below the strings when the string is pressed on the highest fret. As far as I researched it should be the optimum distance for the pickup according to fender owners manual. It already sounds much better.
Which Jazz pickups actually offer the smoothest tone? Basically I want to avoid harshness if possible. As for the strings, I currently use D'addario nickels (45-105 IIRC). Will also try installing a heavier gauge because I did it once and preferred the sound over the standard gauge, though the tension was obviously much greater. But if it helps to fix the issue then it is worth doing it to me.
