My 7 year old wants his first bass

Get the Jag SS and a new set of strings. That's probably the best way to start. The action may need some tweaking at first and for what they are, they tend to be pretty stable once they're dialed in. It's still a good mod platform if that's what he winds up getting into.

I bought my kid the ss jaguar. Not sure if it's a deal breaker or not, but be advised, the neck is not finished. No biggie for me as I can eventually shoot it with a satin laquer if I want. The bridge pup is a little anemic, so I switched it out with a Dimarzio I had floating around, and it also has a bit of neckdive. Still, I have no regrets and occasionally catch myself noodling with it. YMMV and all that Jazz

Decided to go with the SS Jaguar due to my gut feelings and input on this thread.

talking to my son last night about it I told him my decision and he seemed happy, especially once I told him I could get a chrome bridge cover for it.

he said to me "why don't you teach me on one of your basses before you buy it to make sure I like playing bass." Smart kid, unfortunately my basses are far too big for him to learn properly on.

There's a Mom&Pop around the corner from me that carries Fender/Squier stuff, and I was able to get them to order it (at the time, the SS Jag was a new model) and I had my choice to keep it or not when it came in. I think buying at GC also gives you the same flexibility; buying over the net makes it more difficult.

When my son was that age, he went through a handful of instruments before deciding on drums. Hopefully, your guy sticks with his first choice.

amazon.com stocks them and have a great return policy. luckily if he doesn't like I have another son younger than him yet and I'm sure I'd like it as well.
