I wouldn't be so concerned about keeping costs down. I'd be more concerned about my back.
Don't listen to these knuckleheads who are telling you to simply "man up". Chances are most of them have never had spine problems. I have. And I'm 6'2", 250+ pounds, and strong as an ox. Except now for my spine.
Two years ago I blew out a disk - big time - doing some heavy lifting. Had some spinal stenosis too. The net effect is that the injuries paralyzed both my legs.
I soon landed in the hospital, where I had extensive reconstructive surgery of my lower spine. The surgeons replaced three spinal disks with synthetic spacers, installed titanium steel rods and screws, and applied synthetic bone protein along with some steel netting to hold it all in place. It was
four months of daily in-patient physical therapy before I had enough strength in my legs to walk again - barely - and thus return home from hospital. My legs are still partially paralyzed, but gradually getting better.
Yes, by all means work out.
Especially do exercises to strengthen your core (trunk muscles). And also take the excellent advice to learn how to lift properly, and use a dolly whenever possible.
But the body is both a highly resilient and a highly delicate machine. Don't be cavalier about your health. Prevent spine problems early - by being smart. And by ignoring those who would have you believe that you just need to be more macho...
