My band doesn't do covers

Cover bands are a dime a dozen and I have been done with them for decades. There is no satisfaction in playing the same covers over and over and over again for me. And practically anyone can copy other bands music. I would much rather see a good original band any day. But some folks need/like the coin they make in cover bands and you can't fault them for that. But I don't anymore and I much more prefer to play originals, which tends to allow for much more creativity/fun for all involved. I should mention that we do play a couple covers when we do our shows that are done in our own style and are mostly obscure, unrecognizable or unknown to most of the audience. JMTCW

'For me" is your clue. "can't fault them". Jeez, read the post. Pretty obvious where this person is coming from.

Just like my previous reply about quotes, checked a few of these out and they are obviously people's takes on what works for them, not some judgement on whether or not there should be cover bands. I fail to see any post quoted or read claiming there should not be cover bands, or judgement that someone is less of a musician for doing it.
Not in this thread but I read some time back there were a handful of members who wanted cover bands to go away permanently and wanted to go as far as finding a legal angle to make it happen. There is an obvious disdain for cover bands by a lot of 'originals band' musicians. I don't get it though. If it were to happen, most bands then wouldn't gig at all. Most venues are not just going to give you a job just because you're a band that plays original music. Some bands don't belong on any stage and that includes cover bands.

I just read through all of these post you quoted, but in context of the whole post. Out of context they seem harsh, in context of the whole post, far from it. All these people are obviously stating that this is just their take on it for themselves. You'll have to do better than that.
But I think they are personal positions that come from a condescending premise. I don’t think it’s right to say, “Personally, I wouldn’t want to play in a cover band because there’s no artistry in it. But if you only care about making money, go for it!”

Here's a few that I would categorize as condescending or judgy. Specifically there's this not-so-subtle implication that playing in a cover band is not creative or artistic, and that people only do it for the money; I reject that premise and find it kind of offensive.

Oh please! But insinuating that all original bands play empty rooms only?....I'd be offended if i cared more...Maybe Good original bands do...good...(is my experience...)

...a voice of reason....

Attitudes, egos, taste, and artistic integrity aside, I stand by the following:

1.) Within the song writing community there are very few exceptional song writers.

2.) Within the “performing artist” community there are very few exceptional performers.

3.) There are even fewer people that are exceptional at both songwriting AND performing for a crowd.

4.) Now imagine finding 3,4, or 5 people that are the exception to #3, all in the same town... those are your good original bands.

Oh yeah, one more tough pill to swallow: if you’re a bassist for an original band, but you aren’t heavily involved in the writing process (with equal say) then you are also just playing someone else’s music. Nothing wrong with that of course, but you don’t get to talk about being an artist while turning your nose up at the “sellouts” playing in cover bands.

To the OP (and anyone else wondering about his question):
  • Without originals, there would be nothing to cover.
  • Believe in yourself, get good at your craft(s), figure out your market and how to target it and good luck.
  • Don't fear writing songs. Like with almost anything, nobody is particularly good at it when they start.
  • Don't fear playing covers, if that's what you want to do.
There's plenty of people who look at music as a vehicle for making money first and foremost and you have heard from many of them in this thread. If that's your primary goal, then play covers, join tribute bands, become the Swiss Army knife of players and, with a good attitude, you will play as much as you desire.

Me? I write and co-write songs and want to make music in the same genres as the people that inspired me to play music. Playing covers of their songs is fun, but I've luckily found myself in a band with people who also have the fire to write something new, to hopefully reach people the way we were affected by our heroes.

Covers? Originals? Both are valid. What do you want?

not at all, I could waste my time searching, quoting and copy/pasting, but it's pointless. but you can pretend that this hasn't occurred REGULARLY and recently. whatever. in this thread ALONE it's been done. but please keep plugging your ears so you don't have to hear information that doesn't fit your narrative.
Wait... are you responding to me? I’m confused now lol. I was 100% in agreement with you.
