So today I received my much anticipated Xotic BB Pre pedal thanks to ninepoundjammer! I had about an hour to a/b it to my current mosfet Fulltone BD. My plan was to keep the one that fit my needs best and sell the other. What I have found is that while the Xotic can replace the Fulltone as far as coming close to copping my favorite tones, it lacks the versatility that the Fulltone offers. The Xotic also offers a plethora of other tones that I love, but will not be so quick to dial in on the fly. A normal live set provides little opportunity to adjust my tone, let alone tune!
The reasons that I ventured towards replacing my BD is because I rarely use the boost channel as it does not provide enough db boost and does not clip the circuit much more than the regular setting I use which is Vintage/Mosfet/tone @ 10, overdrive @ 2. With the quick flip of the switch, FM mode allows a nice little bit of hair to my tone. The second reason is that I run the BD @ 18v and this requires a separate wall wart from my OneSpot which is just slightly inconvenient. The third reason is that the BD's footprint is more than twice the size of the BB. Finally is the subtle loss of low end, though for my purposes live, I need the mid hump to cut through two electrics.
While testing both pedals to a tune of ours that requires a lot of overdrive on my part, I found that the best option was to use the BB as an always on drive, and then kick on the BD during the bass lead in the breakdown. The sound was awesome. The ideal pedal for me would be the Fulltone with bass & treble control and a boost channel that actually provides 15 db boost after the clipping circuit.
So here's my problem: I'm not sure which one to keep as I like them both, especially with one driving directly into the other. That being said, which one of these pedals would you keep? Do any of you run two Tubescreamer based overdrives on your board? Help me out guys, this is a hard one for me.
