My DP Pushic Custom fiasco........

It took 12+ pages (plus the stuff the mods deleted :D ) to get my hopes down. I think you guys could have done a better job.

Im not going to ask for a refund of my money right now. Honestly, I just dont know. I have heard a good deal of good stories about his basses, but at the same time..i dont know. Honestly, yes, I was just stonewalling all of your comments until Elif gave me an "itemized list" (I wasnt aware he had all of those problems. All the photos I saw were much more minor problems).

I did invest in that piece of wood (almost 200), so .. what to do?

I dont like the sheer look of Carvins. Thats the only reason I wont buy one, in all honesty. I want a deep sound like on Foderas or Jazz basses...
My doubts exist, but I still have some hope. argh...

I understand your feelings.

If I were you, I would make DP a visit, to see how the instrument goes, if you like what you see, and see no flaws, then you are in luck and let him finish it. But If you dont do it, and dont have the chance to do it, then just.. cut it. You just cannot risk your money and hopes on something that probability shows could be a pice of junk.

I wonder if Pushic deliberately puts low quality photos on his web site to hide the flaws that are quite evident in the pics you posted? :eyebrow:

No,that isnt so, he just has a bad camera.

However, all the pics you see on the website are full body takes, mine are closeups of the flaws, thats all.

Nothing compares to seeing an instrument yourself. No camera will replace that.

Sounds good and all...
but I mean... its not going to be started until maybe January (probably more like Feb because I hear a lot of the basses he just built took around 13-15 months to build instead of the prescribed 9) and Im graduating in June.. then off to college. Whats going to happen is one of two things. Either Im going to keep the order and just get on with my life, taking what comes... or Im going to get a refund and look for something used.

You're kidding, right? After all this, the bass isn't even started and you're still willing to risk your money on a DP? What in the world is keeping you from cancelling the order?

One major thing stopping (delaying) me is a replacement. Sure, you can SAY that there are tons of basses out there for somewhere in the low-mid 1k's, but Im having trouble finding them. Perhaps when I figure something out Ill start a new thread on it.

If you want any ideas, right now there are at least one of the following up for sale on bassgear.com in that price range: Zon, Elrick, Bossa, Warwick, MusicMan Stingrays, Sterlings, and Bongo, Modulus, Lakland, Spector, Matt Pullincia, countless Fenders, etc., etc.

There's even a Simonetti four-string not unlike the design you wanted your bass to be being sold by BunnyBass for $1950, which you could probably knock down a bit:

The difference between $1500 and $1900 is two weeks of work at McDonalds.

BassAlone usually has a good assortment of unique 4's for sale, and Bass Central has some of everything.

If you don't mind me asking, but how much of a deposit have you had to put down on the bass? I can understand your reluctance to walk away if you've had to lay down a large chunk, and according to the DP site, it seems that he will, at times, charge over 50% deposit depending on the specs. I couldn't find what the usual deposit requirement is, though.

Wow bryan.. I havent seen that one yet. dang. thanks!

I was actually looking at bunnybass, but cant find all of the used basses. I registered and everything... still looking.
The Stambaugh really caught my eye (http://bunnybass.com/basses/stambaugh_doublecut5_blacklimba/stambaugh_doublecut5_blacklimba.shtml) earlier today. I was going to do a search for aero pickups, because I dont know what they sound like. Otherwise the bass looks like Id really like it.

EDIT: found it. Its not used... so I dont know how much I could knock it down.

My downpayments not that important.. I can get it back (I think). If I cant.. then its going to be pretty awkward between me and dave.

I looked for a year for a great piece of buckeye I wanted for the top on my custom bass. I paid almost $300 for a large piece of buckeye. I sent it to Dave with clear expectations (not my first time doing this) and gave him almost a year to complete the job (after being told it would take less than 4 months). Never rushed him and worked thru issues along the way all with the hope that I would end up with an instrument that was of the quality I had been promised throughout the building process. Once I received it, it spent weeks with a great guitar tech in Dallas just trying to get it playable (forget the many "cosmetic" issues). I ended up with a bass I practically gave away in trade because I would not sell it to someone without clearly explaining the all the many parts that could not be repaired.

I know what it feels like to do all the homework, set clear expectations, patiently wait a long time and be completely disappointed. You have the benefit of many folk's real experiences. Carefully consider if you really want to ignore that.

Good luck!
Jeff

I didnt expect you to post here. But thanks for the words. I asked for the refund. I also just dont have the time. It seems to be that his prescribed 9 months is a far cry from what it really takes. I myself have limited time before I need a good bass... so bass central is having a sale. Im looking into it, and bassbunny (not to mention scouring the internet for other deals).

After I sent that email to Dave my heart sort of sunk, because its like.. almost a years worht of planning and whatnot just gone to waste.. and an instrument (if it would have turned out perfectly.. which it might have... who knows...) that I would have really loved down the crapper.

BTW, I like the matchmaker idea : )
Haha. Its ok, I can do my own work just like everyone else. Thanks for the gesture, anyways.
