My first "real" bass

Every once in a while, you see something and your brain just clicks "that's it!". I saw someone playing an Aerodyne on YT and had that moment. I finally found one on Reverb that went for a decent buck, made a cheeky offer and settled on a decent price.

I thought that SG300 was not half bad, but this thing makes that SG feel like a 9 bob note. It came strung with some flatwounds, but I think they are played out. I got a set of roto sounds for it, but now I'm thinking of going with some Sunbeams or Pure Blues.

I admit, I have never been a fan of black guitars... But I now have this, a Geddy on order, and I am looking at a black-top P-Bass this weekend. The benefit here being I may be able to pass them all off to my wife as the same instrument....

Very nice! Congratulations on the new bass(es). Love your attitude and the “keep ‘em all black and she won’t notice” line of thinking. You’ll need a 12-step Program for a hardcore bass acquisition addiction in no time!*

Fantastic, congrats! Love the look of the Aerodyne. If I ever get a Fender, that’d be the one I’d get.

The thing I can never get straight about the Aerodyne is it has the PJ pickups, so doesn’t that really make it a P bass? But Fender calls it a jazz.

IMO, all basses should be black, and black should be reserved for basses, but that’s probably just me. My current main GAS object of lust is the black Sire V9. So gorgeous...

Since you’re learning toward flexible strings, may I suggest nylon tape wounds? I went with la Bella black tapes on my aerodyne and they are just, right.

BAAAAHAHAHAHA!

I can't get enough of this, and I know EXACTLY what you mean. My wife knows just enough to be able to sniff out some new gear hanging around. I used to be able to bring ANYTHING home, and she wouldn't bat an eyelash, but lately, she's gotten wise to my game.

Another one right one the money. Better to ask for forgiveness than permission. We have a room dedicated to her wardrobe, and another room dedicated to music... If this eases the virtue braggers, I would never flat out lie to my wife about guitars or anything else (if she asks). But I'm not going to go out of my way to explain the finer differences between a P bass and a J bass any more than she's going to help me identify a Louis Vuitton vs a Coach.

Black has always been the most notorious to deal with. My black 78 stingray has the same feeling thick, soft, gummy, smudgy impossible to clean black finish as my 78 p bass. Fender has a new "custom shop cleaning kit at Sweetwater that states: You even get reduced streaking and fingerprinting on black finishes without cloudy buildup." In my teens I used to regularly clean my first fender sb p bass for years with windex. What did I know, but it worked just fine.

On a side note, that's one of the major bummers of playing UB. You can't exactly hide them from your wife. And even when she knows you're getting another it's not the money, it's where are you gonna store the damn thing, lol. I have a pretty big master bedroom, and now it's got a piano, two uprights, a guitar, etc stuffed into it. I just asked my wife about a third bass and she said "Can you live in it?", which I took as a no.......

Just buy more electrics they don't take up so much room. And don't keep them all in the bedroom.
