My First SX came today! Question...

There really are no "must" mods. But depending on your needs, you may want to add heavy duty tuners. I think the tuners are the weakest part of the SX basses.

Actually, from my experience, the stock tuners work VERY well as far as holding tune. In nearly 3 years of gigging with the stockies on my no.1 the only time it's ever come out of tune on a gig is when a guy physicaly slammed into the headstock, and turned the tuning key.

I tend to play pretty darned hard, and I'm more likely to break a string than have the bass come out of tune.

I have a problem with neck heavy basses, so swapped the tuners for a set of ultralites.

Of course, the extra wide strap I got for christmas has the same effect

The tuners on mine seem fine and hold tune with no problems. I recently refinished my neck and also took off some of the wood to reduce size and heaviness. Here is the link.

The SX stock bridge is kind of flimsy. Also, I think Fender Noiseless pickups work well in the Jazz, much better than the stock SX pups (which aren't bad by any means).

While I agree the tuners are the weakest link of SXes in general. Still:
1. All of them hold tune OK, but some bind.
2. Their bass tuners are better than the guitar tuners.
3. The tuners on the 5 strings are better than the 4 stringers (they bind less AND they are smaller). This coupled with the smaller headstock actually makes the balance OK on the 5ers, to me.
