My luthier disagrees with stretching strings...

i always string up one by one tuning as i go, but i do stretch my strings 1) i bend the string over the saddle when im nearly at tuning tension. 2) when almost in tune i bend over the nut at both ends and 3) when almost in tune i fret the 12th with my right thumb and stretch with my finger so the inherant slack in the windings is reduced.

if im not gigging straight away, i will over tune a half step and leave to settle for about 12 hrs then retune with a tuner.

i have done the pulling the string up off the FB in my time and it does work but yes the life of the string suffers.
