I've got a Dual 3.0Ghz MacPro on order with the Nvidia 8800GT card for my new work computer (video production). I ordered the RAM and extra harddrives from MacMall.com, and saved over $1k from what Apple wanted...

macmall, eh? cool. i'll check them out too.

My band recorded our album with Digital Performer on an older PowerMac G5, and we had songs with 50 to 60 tracks, if I recall correctly (some samples at the myspace linked below). I don't know that DP has a track limit... I bet it's all based on what your computer and harddrives can handle.

My main personal/freelance computer is a year and a half old MacBook Pro, which has been great (if a little warm in my lap...).

I also have an old MDD G4 that I'm going to get an airport card for one of these days so it can be my home media server.

So you finally ditched the ADAT XT20's, eh? Those are temperamental units. I used a pair of those for about 10 years until I had a chance to buy a used recording PC with Nuendo 2 from someone who was "upgrading" to Pro-Tools about 2 years ago. My PC has a pair of EMU1212s and I use the ADATLightpipe inputs fed from an Alesis ADAT HD24.

That Motu 24I/O looks great. I'd like to get one but then I'd have to spend even more money that I don't have on upgrading my PC. Computers are an even bigger money sink than bass gear.

see, i wish i could use some of the other software packages out there (would really dig using digital performer, i think) but i made a kind of commitment to protools a while back to maintain pro studio compatibility.

pro tools is so overpriced/overhyped though. sheesh.

just got the 6.02 DP upgrade to audiodesk, and am now staring at my 1000 page manual trying to figure out what to do. heh.

this is gonna be fun. all i need now is the 160 bucks to get the 8 gigs of ram i want to add and i'm set.

Good choice with DP!
I'm a long time MOTU user , and very happy.

+1 for over hipness of Protools.

If you come from Protools , it won't be long before you get the feel of DP.


Just be carefull of the plugins you install, they are not all stable.

the biggest thing that sold me on motu was that i already got the free stripped down version of it with the recording hardware we got. it was an easy upgrade to the full dp, although the 1k page manual tells me there's a slight learning curve heh.

You won't escape this. Mine came with five manuals. One 1300 pages, one 700 pages, and three around 150 pages

oh, yeah, i don't find manuals to be a bad thing heh. it's worse when you don't get em, imo.

heh heh. yeah, that was me. i disassembled the cube monstrosity about a month ago because of the room it took up, but it was still consistently around 10k on 3dmark06, which isn't that shabby considering i made it in july of 06.

still have all the parts, gonna make another one once i can get a job again.
