To give a bit of insight on the Logic suite, the last Logic Studio release is really a huge step up from Logic 7, and the price is ridiculous considering what it includes. The interface has been completely redone and is much smarter than it used to be. Multitake recording is especially welcome (loop a said section, record different ideas all in the same track, and then browse/choose/mix the different takes).

It can take up to 255 audio, midi, and aux channels (255 of each :D) and there's a low latency mode that can cut the hungry effects while recording, if things get delay-ish.

I think the max project size is now a little more than 5 hours of maximum quality CAT (96 hz) files. More if you tone the quality to a reasonable level.

I heard it's pretty friendly with Pro Tools. It supports ReWire too. It can bounce to most popular formats, too.

I have some gripes with the loop management, though. Maybe I haven't found the simple solution yet, but it won't lock loop lengths to the time (I will get a 4 1 1 8 length, for example, which will completely screw the timing if I loop a single instance multiple times). It doesn't matter for final recordings, really. More when I'm throwing together some ideas.

the motu is probably best bang for the buck out there,
i've had the original 828 and the ultralite besides the old 888.
excellent quality build, but there is a noticeable difference with rme.
enough to make me spend the extra bucks...
there is a third party company which has offered converter upgrades for motu, i think called black lion.
either way, 24 bit jump from the previous 20 bit adats should be quite nice/ apparent for you.
just thought i'd add that logic does have some undeniably amazing
native plugs/instruments....the main reason i keep it around.

I'm a MOTU whor*
I have a HD192 , a 2408mkIII and a 828mkIII and DP6 , Mach5II and MX4

The PCI stuff is the best converter for the money spent.
The newer mkIII firewire stuff is also incredible.
I use my 828 as a small digital board for my small band.
With an Octopre , make a 18 ins/10outs digital boards that fits in a two space rack for 750$ !!!!.

Dp will give you as much tracks as your CPU can handle.
In your case , with the "ferrari" you have , I'd say 120+ tracks if you have planty RAM.
I have a 1st gen G5 , and run easiliy 80 tracks with DP6.

Thanks for the link...44 bucks for 4 gigs of ram sounds like a good deal...I may do that (still running stock 2G).

Not to derail the thread, but I've thought about getting Logic Express however I really don't mind garageband that came with the mac. Is Logic Express worth it? I haven't found a reason good enough to spend the money.

heh. the 24i/o we have is like a 24 channel in a single rack spc. i love it.

wow. 120 tracks, depending on ram. wonder what 10 gig will get me :D.

protools really is stuck in the dark ages, trying to force low track counts on folks. would cost $30 grand to get a PT hd system that could handle that many tracks.

You have to buy "digi translator" to be able to export your sessions to another platform.
Another way to keep customer to their platform , your stuck!

What you can do , but it's time consuming ;
If you have plugins applied and like it , and if you have edition on your audio tracks ; bounce all track starting at 0;00;00
Then you just use these "new" tracks in DP.
If your project don't have edition , just import those track in DP
Then , there is "move to original stamp point" wich will place everything where it was originaly recorded.

PT will export SD2 , AIFF or Wave , DP can read all of these and also newer "wave broadcast"

You can install DP , and work on it for newer project and keep PT for your older project.
The transition is gonna be Less brutal

Here's my back up plan. I'm going to read these PT files that I have in ProTool LE, and then I'm going to export them as AIF's so I can pull them into LIVE. Apparently there is a kind of universal file format, kind of like a text file, that allows me to preserve the tracks when importing into a different DAW. Although, I could have dreamt that. I hope I didn't. :atoz:

LOL. Yeah. I forgot where I heard that. I thought I read it on a Live forum, but then I was looking for it yesterday, and I couldn't find it. Now I'm slowly but surely realizing that I might be doing a mindnumbing export of each track as an AIF maneuver. Man I hope that's not the case. Still waiting to get the files off the dude that recorded us. I'll ask him. He might laugh at me. I get that a lot. People laughing at me. I'm not a proud man. :scowl:

I don't know about Live or Logic but in DP it's "OMF interchange" or "AAF Interchange" when you do a "save as"
That is the standard to import/export to different platform.
You have to buy "Digi Translator" in PT to be able to do that.

In DP , you can also Import/Export to XML format to work with Final Cut Pro , maybe you could export to XML in PT :confused:
Would be a way to workaround , but I doubt very much it would be a free thing in PT......
