My new band-- Viking Metuhl!

Hey guys, I recently joined a new band as the drummer.

We take our influences from Amon Amarth, Opeth, Emperor, Norse mythology, turkey legs, Marlboro Reds, etc.

Take a listen and give us some feedback! These are pretty rough sounding recordings overall. But soon enough, we'll have new ones up.

This sounds like melodeath with Viking themes, which is what Amon Amarth is.

Real Viking metal is a lot closer to traditional black metal. Try some Bathory

the whole metal "genre" stuff has gone riddiculous (spelling?)
I personally just define music with feelings, not with how much there is distortion in rhythmn guitar. etc.

Though I like Amon Amarth and Opeth.

to be honest. Well played, but nothing original in your music.
Maybe it´s just me, but it seems a bit awkward that band from USA is making songs about Scandinavian religions/history/mythology. I don´t say that there´s nothing wrong with it, just awkward.

Viking metal is hardly a crazy genre you old people.

Its just metal... but with vocals about viking stuff.

I'm really digging it. Solid compositions, and I dig the Viking Metal vibe overall. This is just me, but I really dig the production, it's got a somewhat lo fi black metal type of tonality, which I really appreciate. I also like that it's rather mid-tempoed, maybe I'm not BR00TAL, but, I hate when bands play as fast as they can... that said, I don't listen to much grindcore these days.

Well done.

I will say Viking Metal is a ridiculous genre, just because they are songs about Viking stuff, it gets to be it's own genre? I'm a fan, but it's pretty absurd.

You obviously haven't heard Running Wild. Check em out...full on Thrashy Pirate Metal...from Germany.

Initially I thought "Viking Metal? How silly." But then I read the Wiki article, and thought "OK, Viking themes are inspirational to Scandinavians, I can see them enjoying it sincerely". Once you bring it to a US band, though, it gets into the whole can of worms about cultural dilution, cultural appropriation, is there anyone "not allowed" to take on a cultural identity, sincerity versus irony, postmodernism, etc. etc.

I'm not saying it can't or shouldn't be done; but if I was going to go there, as a non-Scandinavian in the US, I would make damn sure everyone understood which side I was taking: sincerity or irony. This would be communicated by visuals, band/song names, and the way I verbally introduced people to the concept. Otherwise, if people can't tell whether you are seriously moved by Scandinavian cultural roots, or merely having a bit of fun, they may just blow you off.

I would do it with irony and humor, personally, but I'm not you.

not to me. Amon Amarth sounds similar to other melodic death metal bands. to me.
