My New Bass

Been looking to get a new PJ bass and going to get it in the next week.

Been looking at the folowing 3 bass's for the spec and price:

Yamaha BB424

Schecter Model T

ESP Vintage 214

Do any of those 3 jump out for you over the rest or are they quite evenly rated?

I like the P bass sound but want to have the option of adding a bridge pup for more grind on funk songs etc

Im also aware that the Yamaha has custom pickups that wouldnt be able to be changed very easily if I decide to mod it later.

Also after reading a few threads on here about the Model T pickup positions not being quite correct for authentic P/J???

Im thinking the ESP so far, but let me know of your experiences and opinions on the above 3.

I can vouch for Yamaha. The others are unknowns to me - doesn't mean they're not good, but Yamaha BB's are AWESOME. And you're not going to want to change the pickups.

I've played a BB450 since 1988. I would be devastated if I lost it.

Yamaha. No mods needed. No need for other stuff.

Over the years I have owned 5 Yamaha instruments and they have all been excellent.
IMHO Yamaha is very under rated. Not the most popular or trendy name brand, but they really do make superb instruments.

Go for the Yamaha or Schecter. Way better build quality.

If you're fussy about hum at the bridge pickup, you'll want to go with the Schecter so you can put in a humbucker.

Are the stock pickups actually good enough to use even on the 424 version? I understand they are different on the expensive versions.

Went into gc the other day, and saw the schecter. It was horribly ugly imo (cant remember what finish, I think black) and nearly put me off to the whole bass. That being said, I voted for the schecter. I LOVED the tone of it, better than many a pj ive played, including that esp. Also the neck was a dream to play on for me, glossy but not "grabby." But everything about it (apart from cosmetics) was very top notch

Yes they are good enough. No need to replace. Owned the BB415, 'twas a really big tone beast.

I voted Yamaha, but if the Schecter is a TRUE Schecter, and not a "diamond series", that's a pretty great bass as well.

If he was comparing a US Schecter custom, he'd probably be comparing it to a BB2024X, not a BB424X.
