I put a full 200A auto transfer switch between the meter and the panel. I have a Kohler natural gas commercial standby generator (free from a building being torn down only 2 yrs old when I got it) if the power goes down, the generator auto starts within 30sec. Basically I’m good to go until the power is back on, no hassles. I Have only needed it a few times since I installed it. Before that I had to run on a Honda generator for 7days when we had major storm damage. It worked great, but was a pain to keep fueled as all the local gas stations had no power.
funny story, the Honda was so quiet, the neighbor couldn’t hear it. He asked why we had power. I told him I had a buddy at the power company, and they could only turn a couple of houses on so he hooked me up. Neighbor spent hours on the phone begging the power company to turn him on. It was pretty entertaining.
