Interfaces went back to Apogee for repair. The cable swapping ultimately didn't solve the problem. Ruined a session on Monday night with a client. Pretty embarrassing. I ran into the house and grabbed my old Presonus Audiobox iTwo that my wife uses for doing business videos. I plug it in and get TONS of extraneous noise. A very peculiar high frequency whining sound mixed with static. It was an extremely effective sound at producing anxiety in both me and the client (she's the one that made the comment, haha). So basically the night went down in flames and I sent her home early after having accomplished nothing. As I said, I was embarrassed and felt wholly unprofessional. She was very kind about it and we'll get back to work once my interfaces are returned. The problem with the Presonus, as it turns out, is that the older Audiobox interfaces must be run on USB 2.0. Something about the architecture of USB 3.0 (my computer has two USB 3.0 ports and four USB C ports) causes those interfaces to make exactly the sound I was describing. I've ordered a USB C replacement stereo interface to keep as a backup in case this sort of thing ever happens again. Lesson learned. Even higher end gear from extremely reputable manufacturers can be faulty as has been evidenced by my Apogee interfaces and my ADAM subwoofer.
