You're slightly off. My current setup has a Mackie Onyx Blackbird at the center of the chain. I was never intending to keep it in service once the new studio was up and running. My initial plan was to use a Focusrite Clarrett 8PreX as the centerpiece with a Clarrett OctoPre added in via ADAT to expand to 16. I recently had a chance to play around with Apogee's updated Ensemble and the Apogee Remote. I really liked the functionality, and expanding via their lower priced Element series (same preamps, same converters, lack of a front panel interface) seemed like a solid choice.
Entirely. I had a hybrid setup for a while, but never really felt like anything was improved and there was a lot lost due to the lack of recall in the outboard equipment I was using. I suspect that if I went all in on an OTB setup with full recall I would dig it, but it's simply not cost or space feasible for what will be my finished space.
