I'm thinking of getting an OLP stingray copy- a stock one I tried didn't have much highs, but I wonder how it would sound with the controls bypassed, and/or a new pickup and/or preamp.

I agree totally with this. I only took umbrage at the myth of a huge savings - there simply isn't a huge savings (or none if you factor time/labour) - or that anyone who'd prefer the "real thing" is somehow brainwashed.

I want a Bongo, I think they sound amazing... or the one I played sounded amazing anyway. I like the look of them too... I didn't at first, but they kinda grew on me... Then when I got to see one in person, and play one , I just have to say I like them alot.

Well actually no but if I did want one I'd simply wait a month or two and buy one on closeout at $599.

even just for the sake of modifying a bass, changing it here and there and calling it "mine" is well worth that price. And if you get close to that sound, more power to you...

Bought my Essex ( P with P/J pups ) from musicnet ( Invalid Link Removed )..Paid $250 shipped to Canberra with a gig bag/Cables/picks chucked in coz he didn't have the colour I wanted ( Wanted the red one but he only had Blue at the time )..

I too have had people at gigs/jams tell me I have great tone and ask me what kind of Bass it is..I just smile to myself everytime & watch them pick their jaws up off the floor when I tell 'em its a $250 China made copy....Had one guy have a fiddle with it & ask me what it was worth coz he'd never heard of the brand, I asked him how much he thought I would have paid for it & he said about $1500.....LOL I'm serious!!!!

The guy in the blue mountains trades as "Stairway to Kevin" Talked to him a coupla times..He seems like a straight up guy too...Take your pick!

I've seen this AXl Suncoast on E-Bay for $289 with active pick-up. The headstock is different than the O.L.P. and I've heard AXLs/Johnsons are low quality? But this one comes with fender strings and 5 year warranty. Do they compare with essex/brice basses for quality? Has anyone seen or played one of these?

I have a question for anyone who has installed an active preamp in the OLP: Did you have to have any routing done? I'm also looking into buying the OLP MM-3 5-string and modding it with active electronics.

BTW, I have read reviews on the MM-3 where vintage Stingray owners say the stock OLP sounds similar to a vintage Stingray.

But I do agree that the wording by Mr Toby implied more than he really means. Even though OLP has an official license from Ernie Ball to manufacture these basses with very similar specs as the Stingray, they are not Stingrays. The only way (IMO) to make one a Stingray is to buy a Stingray and put the OLP name on it.
