My peavey project.

So I picked this little guy up at a pawnshop, and I’ve wanted a fury for a while, but I’ve also wanted to put a t40 pickup in a pbass style bass for a minute. So I found a a really good chance to do both at the same time. The bass started out super rough, but I was set on it- someone had modified it before so I didn’t have to feel bad about making it better atleast. Yes that’s a single coil guitar pickup, and it made noise

I have never owned a natural body guitar/bass so I decided to go that route. Plus the paint was it bad shape, after I stripped it I was surprised at how nice the wood looked, to be painted I didn’t expect much. I stripped the paint with citrustrip, cleaned with odorless mineral spirits, Sanded with 400 grit then went at it with 0000 steel wool and spirits to clean everything good, and make it more smooth.I’ll probably just finish it in boiled linseed oil.

I have just a little more to chisel and I think the pickup is ready to fit, and then I’ve got to totally wire the whole thing - also painted the pickguard black

I have a three way toggle switch and it should let me go split/series/parallel. But I’ve just got to find a good place to put the switch. I was thinking a moving the input jack on the body and used the existing hole, or maybe putting the switch on the horn, ooor just squeezing it by the knobs.

But I’d just thought I’d share the progress, this is my first project guitar and it’s been a lot of fun so far. Also I have no idea what I’m doing half the time - keep in mind I’m a young lad at 23 so I’ll probably aske questions when needed but do far I think it’s going pretty good - feel free to give me yalls thoughts and opinions

Based off the color change on the round-over on the upper horn I don't think you stripped all the finish off. There's a clear-ish sealer coat under the black on those guys that I suspect is polyester and doesn't react to chemical strippers, so you'll need more elbow grease and perhaps something rougher than 400 to get to the bare poplar. I stripped an old Peavey Patriot guitar of the same vintage and encountered this exact same issue.

I noticed that but I kind of figured I’d leave what little was left, both out of laziness and just to give it whatever character it’s got goin on. I did sand most of it off but that was just the leftover stuff - and it is tough, I went at it with 320 for a bit, then worked up from there. I might go back over it one last time though

Nice! I always liked the early Peavey Fury/Foundation shape.

I have a T40 pickup too, but mine only has three wires, which means the only options are series or single, no parallel. Is yours three wires or four?

Dang that’s a bummer man, I looked them up and it appers as though they’re all 3 but I haven’t even looked. Do you think it would be worth it to single/ series? Would there be a significant tone change,Or should I just skip the toggle switch? Or could I do single/series/kill or do I need an on/off/on

Alright cool, can I still use the three way even if one does nothing? And what do you think - should I move the jack to the body or get a mini 2 way switch for the pickguard

For series/single, you only need a two-way switch. I would use a push/pull volume pot.

I like toggle switches more, I know toggle switches arent as stealthy but I don’t mind putting a hole in the pickguard it’s already coustom, I will think about it though

So the time has come to wire it, I’ve got this harness but I’m trying to think if I want to either sweeze the toggle between the jack and tone or move the jack to the body and use the existing holes, what do y’all think ?

So I had gotten sick for alittle bit and kinda dragged out this project. I did however re sand the whole body and went up to 600, did three coats of boiled linseed oil, and I’m currently on my second coat of tru oil - all the oil costs were a very time consuming process. I did order a push pull pot it should get here soon, so I should be ready to wire, just have to make sure I do everything right. Might have to go the the pickup cavity alittle more - but hopefully not. But so far aside from a few headaches it seems to be doing just fine. I’m glad I re did the finish, it looks a lot better, this project is a first for me and has been a big learning process
