well, I actually got everything and completed this rig a few weeks ago, but could post pics till now. for the last few practices I've had with it, it's just an amazing improvement. it's very nice to actually be loud enough now. I'm pretty happy...

it's great an' all; I thought I was really diggin the tone that I'm getting from it. well, then just a few days ago, I plugged into (in my room for practice) my ba115hp combo that I was playing previously. the moment i started playing, I was just blown away and melted into a ball of melodic, orgasmic, deliciousness. i completely forget how much i like this combo at low volumes. if the master volume's above 5, the sound (to my ears) starts getting crappier, but until then, I'm in bass heaven.

my conclusions: the cabs I have are serving their purpose, but I think I'll start looking for others on the market. I'm thinking ampeg since I'm diggin this combo so much, but I'm not sure. then I don't know if I should stay with a 15 and 2 10's, or if I should go for a 410, some 12's, or what. unless I find a great deal on a better amp, though, i think I can live with the hartke 3500 for a while... what do you all think?

Thats a pretty damm alright right you got there.
I used a similar rig for about 2 years of gigging and rehearsal and it served me well.
Then I got the tube/sealed cab bug and its been sitting unused for the last 18 months.
Might be offloading it soon though!

Yeah I understand U re the Ampeg 'tone'. Unfortunately ONLY ampeg has it! I recently got a Ampeg V4BH 100w tube amp, I wasn't that impressed w/ it till I played it with the band & MAN it just "sits" right where it should in the mix-beautiful. It'd drive yr cabs REAL well too! U can pick 'em up at good prices on the bay etc.. Don't let the 100w fool U either-it's got about the same volume capabilities as... say...the SVT3PRO-450w s.s. Tube watts are LOUDER in comparison. Worms here beware. ;-)

Did you pick up that V4 that was on aussie ebay?
I had a good look at that sitting on ebay for 2 weeks and was very tempted to jump on it!

I actually really like the hartke head. with everything flat and soloing the neck pickup on my bass, it gives a tone that goes great for metal. it really picks up on a kind of rough frictiony sound from my fingers on the strings that just sounds great imo with distorted guitar(s). then if I blend both humbuckers evenly and just slightly boost the bass on the amps eq, and a little bit more of the tube preamp than the ss preamp runnin, it gives a really nice, smooth, round tone that sounds good with all the softer, more alternative/proggresive stuff we play.

I do really like how this amp sounds, but I also know what other tones I like more and don't know what would bring me closer to 'em: a different amp or different cabs. hmmm....

...different amp! I tried to like the 3500 I had for a short while, but it just didn't cut it. The tube preamp is pre-EQed to have a nasally mid cut tone and the SS section was too sterile sounding. From your description of the tone you are seeking, you might want to check out one of the following:

GK 700RB or 1001RB
SWR 350X, 550X or 750X
Markbass TA503

For your sound, probably one of the SWRs may be best. YMMV :bassist:
