I picked up a Peavey Grind 5 NTB off of Craiglist recently for $250. It's a good looking instrument, and the neck is really nice. It's amazing how easy it is to reach higher frets (17 to 24). The body resonates amazingly well.

However -- and I don't know whether this is a problem with only my instrument -- it sounds muffled relative to my other basses, like the treble is rolled off. Adjusting either of the tone pots just make the sound even muddier.

I haven't yet tried to uncover the problem. YMMV.

I have a Peavey Millenium 4 which has been pretty good . The body on the cheaper Peaveys is made of basswood or glorified chipboard. Despite this, it sounds ok, it has unbelievable sustain. The neck is nice, having a really smooth matt finish which never gets sticky when playing. Only thing that lets it down really is the really cheap pick ups. The E string is really loud as is the D and G but the A string sounds reaaly weak. I've tried fiddling with pick jp height and lowering the strings a bit but it really makes no discernible difference.
I also find the neck really short and find i run out of room very quickly.
I am going for a Kramer D1 next. I really dislike the way the Fenders play and to me the Squires are even worse. Doesnt help that i really dont like the P and J shape either. Just not for me.
As a beginers bass the Peaveys are ok. A lot better than other cheapy types but to get any sort of good sound, change the pups.

Know what you like and dislike about the bass you have, then look for the good qualities in your next one. I've spent too much money on basses I didn't like, simply because they looked like I needed them. Play everything you can get your hands on and decide when you know what type of pick-up/fretboard/body shape/weight/color you prefer.
