My Squier P bass finally arrived

Alright, so I started a thread about two or three weeks ago where I let you guys know that I bought a use Squier Affinity Precision for the amazing price of $80 on eBay. The bass arrived today and here are my initial thoughts. Right off the bat, I love the neck. High end or low end, the neck is the first thing that I notice when I look at a guitar or bass. This neck reminds me of a 1991 MIM Fender Strat and that is a plus in my book. The tuners are Schaller style as opposed to the small ones that you see on modern Affinity basses and the nut is alright. Now for the nit-picks. The pick ups while decent, are the first thing that I will replace (I was thinking about some MIM P bass pick ups or some Parson Street ones). The pots and input are definitely going to be replaced (they are all rusty and the bass has a ground noise that its just driving me crazy). The bridge has a bit of rust in it, but it's not that bad and can probably be remedied. Aside from all of that, I plan on changing the white pick guard for a tortoise one and install some pick ups and bridge covers. Over all, it's not a bad bass and I will take it to get set up on Saturday. For the first time, Squier doesn't disappoint me. Also, the bass is from 1997. That's a cool fact IMO

A very decent instrument. A tort guard is going to look great. I don't know Parson Street pickups but I wouldn't waste my money and time on MIM pickups when there is a plethora of high quality aftermarket pickups available for Precision basses.

I said Parson Streets, but I meant Golden Age pick ups that are made by Steward McDonald. They used to have Parson Street branded pick ups and i thought that they were still in production (I went into the stewmac website after posting this thread and found out otherwise). Either way, I want Golden Age pick ups, the tort pick guard, new wiring and pick guard and bridge covers. In short, I'm basically going to turn it into a 70's precision bass clone

Nice. Just a suggestion, but why not try to set it up yoursel before spending any more money? There are plenty of links to great videos here on TB. It is easy to learn how to do. Just take your time and be patient. In the end you'll be really satified with yourself when you are done. And keep in mind that as long as you use the right tools, you cant mess it up. You can put the money you save toward new pickups if you really think yours needs an upgrade.

i don't think that the neck is of the highest quality, but i have started playing p-width necks with that bass and it was the reason i bought my MIA. i just really prefer that width now compared to the thin jazz necks.

Nice bass,I have same color etc. On my favorite bass,mine is a mim,I wasn't fond of the sound open e was never right to my ear,I put in some Fender Custom Shop 60's pup in it and I love it,some may argue them, but they sound great imo and don't cost a lot of dough

I have one. You really can't get a plain Affinity series P Bass separately anymore new- I think it's the PJ setup or nothing. I got one in a starter pack because I wanted sunburst/maple.. I like the neck on these also, chunkier for my big hand and surprisingly well finished!

Yeah, you can only get the PJ setup, now. I don't like the modern Squier Affinity series. They feel very toy like and cheap (I know that the price is low, but some basses don't feel like what they cost) to me. This one is an older model from 1997 and it actually feels nice. The neck is finished nicely like a Fender and it doesn't feel like some cheap piece of Chinese wood in my hand. If I were to pick up a modern Squier, it will be a Vintage Modified model.

Nice job! That will look great with tort and ashtray and pickup cover. Add a tug bar for the vintage look if you are so inclined! Have you considered the EMG Geezer Butler Pickup? I was shocked at how good they sound in my CV Squier! $100 and it comes with plug and play pots. Takes less than an hour to put it all together. Enjoy your new bass! That's a great deal!
