I continuity checked everything as I went and found no shorts. I kept the bass unplugged and in it's case when not in use.

I performed the bypass. I am using the EQ on my amp for tone so did not incorporate the pretty tone knobs. All that is in use now is Volume and pickup sweep. (Bridge/Neck)
I do design simple analog circuits so I have connectors, circuit boards and a nice soldering set up. I created a circuit board that I can simply plug in and bypass the pre. If you look at the preamp with the harnesses on top, pins 1 - 19 are how I count them. (7 on one, 6 on two and 6 on three)
Pins 1&6 bridged
Pins 2 and 4 (grounds) bridged
pins 3 and 5 bridged
pins 7 and 17 bridged (orange)
this effectively bypasses the 3 band EQ and the preamp for real passive function and no battery.

I've been using batteries in most of my basses for over 20 years and I have never had batteries go dead on me. Once one was weak because I left the bass plugged in for a week... so it clipped a little.
If the batteries are draining that fast, and you unplug the bass when you are not playing, there's either short somewhere (sometimes the battery wire on the output jack can short to the shielding) or you have a bad preamp.
Nothing in that preamp draws that much current for you to be having that problem.
And don't use zinc/carbon batteries or nicads.
