Double Bass My string journey documented (to be Continued)

I`m also looking for a more balanced feel. The generic 2,5mm gut G sounds great, as powerful as a G string possibly can, but it feels tense comparing to the rest of the set with plain A and D. Not like I`m your big thumb position soloist, but practising TP has been a bit too much hard work and becomes painful experience in no time. Thinner string and higher setup seems to work out fine, I`ve been recording myself all day.

@Povl Carstensen : I have tried Efrano weich G, 2,2mm gauge if I recall. It`s very nice string with full bodied tone. My Baldock 2,1mm is on the stringier side of things, but sounds fuller to a distance.
Exactly my experience, the G string felt tense, and the sound was not very "deep" to me. I have hopes for an Efrano, also based on the Efrano "stark" G, I have tried earlier. But it will have to be later in the year.

My spirocore D string broke.

Not a snap but I can't tune it up to pitch. I haven't been playing a lot (working res life at a jazz camp). I subbed for a combos bassist tonight and half way through a tune it dropped pitch.

Everything else looks fine. Just the D string I get it tuned to about a C and it drops again. Peg doesn't seem to move when it happens. Has this happened to anyone else?

I had that happen with a Thomastik Superflexible that had been removed and reinstalled. I'm pretty sure it means that the core is unraveling and the string will eventually fail.

Thus continues your string journey...

Ok so this is actually an interesting predicament I'm in:

As you may have seen above my spiro D was put through too much abuse :(. I ordered a set off of Ebay for just under a new set but when I got the string, I realized they were Starks. They are now in the Classifieds.

I found a used set on here for a good price, but then my phone decided to not work anymore so there goes the funds for that...

so...what are starks like? At this point its starks or wait till my next gig on a 3 string bass or find a D string.

What are string thicknesses like among the spiro sets? Particularly the G string. I plan on switching to Spiro Mitts or Weichs later on in the year after my Helicore Hybrid Lights die a bit more. One thing i hate about the Heli's is the thin G string. I liked my Zyex G string much more. Do the Spiro sets suffer from the same issue? Is this why many will use a substitute on the G?

Thanks for the details folks. Honestly i think my issue mainly stems from my nut being cut for a Zyex G. It seems like when i put on the Heli G the string height of the string went down considerably and kind of killed my E to G balance. Anyone else have that sort of problem when switching out strings? I don't want to have to get a new nut cut for a string change and am having trouble getting to where i need to with the bridge adjusters.

All steel core strings are a lot thinner than synthetic or gut core strings. The diameter depends on the mass of the metal used, the tension and the amount and type of damping material.

For string diameters there is a nice table in my Dropbox that comes from a site baen.tamu.edu, that has gone and was reconstructed. Have a look at the end of the last string sticky for the link and feel free to download from there as much as you want.
