I once built a bass with a Warmoth body and USA Custom Guitars neck because a friend who worked at a music store offered me a Seymour Duncan single-coil P pickup at a discounted price due to its having sat there in inventory for a long time. It was cheap, so of course I had to buy it... and as long as I had it, of course I had to build a bass to put it in. I'm an expert at justifying unnecessary purchases to myself. --mark
Sadly there really isn't any exaggeration in my meme. I have a MIA P-Bass which had TI Jazz Flats strung on it, but I found that my P-Bass with rounds works really well with the band I'm in, so now I have a set of TI Jazz Flats feeling lonely. I could string them up on another bass, but to me the TIs on a P-Bass is like a match made in heaven, so now I want another MIA P-Bass so that these flats can start singing again.
I found a Hipshot detuner for a price I couldn’t pass up, so I bought it even though I didn’t have a bass that it would match on. So I built a bass around it.
Long since gone. Started with a Hipshot BT-2 that I bought for $10. Then Schaller tuners that matched the BT-2's mounting pattern. Mighty Mite P neck finished in Reranch vintage tint and nitro lacquer. Body, bridge, control plate and neck plate from a MIM Jazz. Originally midnight wine, then refinished in Fiesta Red nitro from Reranch. Allparts pickguard. Fender MIJ 70's RI pickups. CTS pots, Orange Drop cap, Switchcraft jack, series/parallel switch. Ironically, I had removed the detuner after a short while because I was never using it and wanted less weight up top.
