my tone pot doesnt do much!!

Ive got a 500k tone pot for my jazz, as opposed to the standard 250(because i did the switching mod)

right now it basically has 2 sounds, when full its basically normal sounding, then when i turn it it only changes right at the other end to a more muffled sound, there doesnt seem to be any in between.

could it be a bad capacitor? or a bad pot

It might not be that either or both of them are bad, but that they might not be the "right" ones you need. A 500K pot will let a lot more high-end through the signal than a 250K pot, which is known to be a bit "warmer" sounding. I would think that a 500K tone pot would not have the same affect on the tone as a 250K.

Also, what is the value of the Capacitor you're using? If you're using a standard .047 cap, I'd suggest trying out a .1 cap instead.

This also depends on the quality of the cap. If you're using a cheap cap (I can't think of any more material than ceramic) sometimes there will be no difference until the tone is rolled completely off.

Certain brands such as Orange Drop Caps have been known to have a much more gradual tone drop, and many people highly recommend them. I haven't used these yet, but I will try those out when I get back to working on my SX.

FWIW.
