There's a strong possibility I'll be in Toronto at end of June for a conference, Nothing to do with basses, unfortunately.

But if anyone wants to say Hi or catch up for a bass-obsessed beer after work, or show me a good jazz club ... let me know here or by PM!

Matthew, as you circumvent the world on your trip, and if you happen to pass over North Carolina, wave really big and have the pilot to toot the horn on the jet.

If it's not too hot, I 'll keep the window in my office open and listen...

Enjoy your visit! You may not know that July 1 is a national holiday in Canada, so that's a long weekend for many of us (depending on whether you take off the Friday or the Monday). A lot of people go away for that weekend.

Hey Matthew,

Good timing on the visit! People that don't go away for the long weekend get to hear quite a number of free, outdoor concerts, of all types of music (some jazz included)... There is probably info. on this in the Jazz Festival guide.

If you're here on July 1, there will be day long concerts at City Hall (Nathan Phillips Square), Harbourfront, and Yonge-Dundas Square. Perhaps other places, as well. There is a free weekly entertainment paper, called NOW Magazine, that has all sorts of events listed. They are online, as well.

Keep in touch re. your plans / the possibility of a beer!

Well ... I did get to listen to a few bars of Don Thompson, but the venue was so packed I was ushered out the door ... after I had walked 50 minutes to get there. So I didn't get to give him that mushy kiss you sent, Rob. probably just as well. But from what I did hear (in duet with a guitarist), lovely tone and impeccable timing. Natty beard, too.

And I didn't get to see Mike Downes, but I met up with Eh Train for a beer and we went to see Lina Allemano (trumpetito) and her bassist - Andrew Downing - was pretty hot.

Watched him for several songs and knew something was really really odd about his fingerings ... then it hit me: he was tuned in fifths! This was Joel's town, after all. Nice to watch, I'll have to give fifths tuning a go again ... one day.

Despite not seeing all you wanted to see, I hope it was a worthwhile trip for you. As for tuning in fifths - I understand Joel's now in Ottawa. So maybe this'll go back to being a "fourths town."
