I have a great wife. She is my second. My first wife - obviously not so great.
I had to use some of the same tactics outlined here with my first wife - I knew that new basses would not be acceptable, and I hid some in cases, had some shipped to work, etc. I bought and sold tons of basses, and had my own rule that I only used gig money or money from another bass to buy a bass, but even that wasn't acceptable. Needless to say, things didn't work out, and I had to sell quite a few basses in the divorce.
FF to present day, and my current wife couldn't be more supportive. She actually encourages me to buy basses - some of it is to replace all of the basses that I sold in the divorce (still looking for a few) and some of it is that she knows it makes me happy (and she wants me to be happy). My last bass I picked up because she liked the color .... I've never had to be dishonest or hide gear from her and that motivates me to be an adult about things. It also helps that she has a closet full of Louboutins, Jimmy Choos, an endless supply of leather jackets, etc. We do have a very strict budget that we stick to, but that keeps me from having tons of basses that I don't play and she doesn't have tons of shoes that she doesn't wear. It all works out great!
