I'd like to hear your thoughts on this Munji. I've always enjoyed your knowledge on these topics.

Sounds like quarry blasts to me, but what do I know? My best guess would be that it's residual rebound from the last glaciation. The local geology is very old sandstones, limestones and dolomite underlain by igneous shield rocks. That part of the country was under miles of ice less than 20,000 years ago. When the glaciers retreated, the decreased load resulted in uplift of the underlying rocks due to elastic rebound. That may still be going on.

One news report had a geologist's speculation that made a lot of sense. The water table in the area has lowered dramatically, and the underlying bedrock (granite) may be "drying out". The cracks and fissures in teh granite would now become dry allowing stresses to build up higher until they are released with higher energy.
