Hey,
First time posting, stoked to be here!
I have a few questions about a '83-'84 "Squire" P bass. I've searched and can't find these answers. Keep in mind that I don't know very much about basses at all.
This bass was given to me by a friend in '94. He had it from at least 1990 - he thought it was an '83 Fender P bass. The serial number shows it as a 1983 Squire mij. If true, do three knobs indicate it's a Squire P Bass Special? Or just a mod?
The second question is about the neck. It says Fender on the headstock and the serial number is DES 186 826 which I think dates to 1966? Of course the body is not that Fender. Is that genuine you think or just the decal added to another neck? Can't find that logo anywhere on the 60's basses, not in '66 w/the larger gold font outlined in black and the wavy "Precision Bass". Looks like an 80's logo?.
I can't take off the neck, check the pots, or the pickups so can't verify anything that way. Obviously it's been sitting around forever, rust etc. I'm guessing it's just different parts thrown together, but the neck interests me as it seems strange to put a decal on another neck when the serial number is for a Squire. Doesn't seem to be worth the effort. Unless it was worth it in '83. Not sure when they had the skunk strip or strap button on the back. I'll most likely keep it, clean it, and play - not a bad deal. Anyway I appreciate any info/thoughts you have - thanks!
