I wish you luck with East Texas! So far, I haven't seen a music scene near here, and the only local shop (Encore Music) is a total rip off. Granted, I'm only in Nacogdoches. Don't know about anywhere else

There is a crazy good underground metal scene here, most everyone I know is or has played in a metal band. There is also a badass bar in my hometown where local metal bands from anywhere and everywhere come to play. I'm not terribly worried, I play for fun, don't ever plan on getting famous or making money with it, but there is plenty of opportunity to learn from some damn good metal bass players.
