NAD: Ampeg PF-50T

Hello all!

I recently purchased an Ampeg PF-50T and figured I’d share my thoughts and seek some opinions.
I generally play in a three piece garage rock band and like to have a nice layer of fuzz in my tone. I play a jazz bass with Rotosound RS88 strings tuned to d standard with a pick. I have been using a Bugera bvv3000, a 300 tube watt Ampeg svt clone is my quickest description, and really enjoyed it with the gain cranked but couldn’t really touch the master w/o being asked to turn down. Before that I was using a GK 1001rb-II and a bass big muff pi in dry mode for distortion/fuzz/overdrive (is there a correct term?).
I’ve been wanting to step down in wattage for a while and figured I might as well just start at the lowest practical end. The PF-50T is definitely loud enough for practice through a single 410. The guitarist uses a 100 tube watt Sovtek and a 412, but we don't really crank it at practice. The drummer doesn't hit light but also isn't normally cracking symbols at practice, I guess moderately loud rock? I had the gain at 6.5 and the master at 4.
I plugged the PF-50T into two 410 cabs and turned it up about as loud as seemed practical. Around 7 on the master and 7 on the gain produced a really nice loud full sound with the amount of distortion I like and our closest approximation for "probably loud enough" at a show. Turning the gain or master any further doesn't really add loudness it just gets more distorted. For the eq, 5 being flat, I had bass ~6-7, higher and it starts to get "farty", I'm still trying to figure out where I like the mid but also around 6, and usually on the fourth setting but the second setting really adds something.. and I cut the treble back to 4.

It doesn't have the same gut punch of a ton of bass that my Bugera or the GK amps can give, but I don't think I can expect it to when it's only 50 watts. I really like the sound I'm getting, but is this a surefire way to destroy speakers? The cabs are rated for way more than 50 watts, but is this a moot point when I'm sending a distorted power amp signal? Hopefully not because it sounds great!

Maybe get an Ampeg V4B?

This makes me ask this question:

- it's preferable to get a PF-50T and play it with volumes always over 8-9, or get the V4B and play with volumes between 4-5?

I mean... Will it sound "better" if you crank the volume of an amp or it's preferable to play it with lower volumes not to distort the sound?

Not sure if I'm making myself clear here...

Oh! This for the exact same speaker.

I'm also asking because I'm about to buy a PF-50T for practice and home recording, yet I'm concerned it will be underpowered if I want to actually practice with a band. The opposite also applies... I'm concerned the V4B would be an overkill for home use and that playing with the volume knob all the way down could make the sound "meh"...

CTv, with a 410, and especially with two of them, you're in no danger of blowing a cab whatsoever with the 50T. At most, it'll put out 100w in peaks. Maybe the tweeter could get blown, but who runs a tweeter with dirt? :D

Blur, there is no question that cranking a tube amp hard is hard on tubes. How long they'll last, I don't know, but they won't last as long as running them at lower volumes. And whether you like the 50T cranked over the V4B at reasonable volume is a matter of taste. I never crank any of my amps on a gig, and I use pedals for dirt, and I love how they sound, although I definitely prefer cranked tubes. But I need clean sounds on my gigs, and nobody will even let me crank a 25w B-15 on most of my gigs, let alone a 50w amp!

And. Remember if you love the PF50T's tone etc, you can run it into a (lightweight, if you like) power amp and get the same tone only louder.

I THINK that's right, with this all tube amp ( @JimmyM ) ?
It's a rare beast, where you can actually run it without a load (cab) unlike 98% of all tube amps, that must have a load to operate safely
Correct, Rod.

I'm using a PF-50t and have similar issues and questions. Also in a garage rock type of band.
It hasn't been cutting through during gigs using the 450 watt 210he portaflex cab. I added a 600/300 watt 115 Fender rumble cab and it's not doing much better. I like the tone of this amp and mostly just want it to be louder without having to fully crank it. but Ive never added a power amp to anything and wasn't sure what would be appropriate for this set-up.

You can use anything as a power amp as long as it has a preamp in or effect loop. Just go from one of the Xlr outs (might need an adapter for Xlr to 1/4" with most bass amps). And don't plug anything into the speaker outs unless it's a speaker ;)

Alternately, you can try tilting your cab up a little.

Shields around the drums and everyone else turn down.

Barring that, add an HPF to cut the mud from your tone. Then see how you do.
