NAD: SVT-CL!!

If I were you I would try to get the sender to file a claim for the repairs.

It probably won't go well, but you might as well try.

We are in the process of doing that. I can't see FedEx doing anything except denying the claim due to poor packaging but who knows. The seller, is being somewhat cooperative but persistent in the fact that I can't PROVE that anything broke due to his poor packaging, which is true, I can't prove anything. Also the amp was missing three knobs, which I knew about, but the seller said in the original posting that they would be put on before he shipped it, they weren't. Now he's telling me he has to order them for me, ***? I'm about to leave a negative feedback simply for that, not to mention the poor packaging and laundry list of repairs.

Sad. FEDEX will not reimburse if they know how it was packed. Totally, completely and thoroughly unacceptable. I would tell the seller I want him to reimburse me and handle the claim himself, otherwise justifiable bad feedback should ensue.

Some people are lazy and some others just don't get it. I just bought a 40lb cab from a TBer I know to be a standup, honest guy. It was shipped from one coast to the other, in a box, with its' LeCover and NO other padding. The box fit into the cab like a hooker into a pair of neoprene tights. I was astonished. He said he had sent and received cabs like that before, and in this case there was a rattle I was able to troubleshoot. However, there is a reason none of the many cabs I have bought new has ever come without at least 2" of noncompressible foam at all the corners; it's the same reason UPS will not insure a package unless it's secured that way.

I feel your pain, but I would not expect any ins. $$ to come in.

I think that the Sovtek 6550WE are great tubes. I have them in both of my SVT-2 Pro. I demo'd an SVT-7 Pro and it just wasn't the same.

I'm glad to hear that you're falling in love with your amp -- congrats, and welcome to the world of Real Tube SVTs. :bassist:

Vegan Thump, I hope everything goes well for you, your post has been rolling around in my head since I read it.
Yes those tube amps sure sound good, don't they...
And I too always thought that tube watts were louder than SS watts to my ears... but you will find a lot of experts that say watts are watts reguardless if it's a tube amp or SS,but I can tell a difference....anyways
you have got the amp going now,I hope you can recover a little from this nightmare
Good luck and enjoy the SVT.........

Yeah I'm starting to calm down a bit now, I was livid last night and I actually woke up angry this morning just thinking about this whole debacle but the angry has started to subside. The only thing that sucks now is that my new toy is at our practice space and all I want to do is play with it! :bawl:

I bought a CL from a TBer. Arrived very well packed, via Fedx. No issues. Also using an Ampeg 810. 2 months later I ended up paying $250 for some blown resistors and leaking caps and $180 for some NOS 6550Bs. No fault of the seller. Stuff happens. Either way I got a hell of a rig and it was way more than worth it. My point is that at some point it is likely you'll have to drop a little coin into it regardless and new tubes are never a bad idea. Move on and be thankful you got the baddest rig in existence.

UPDATE:

I got the amp back from the tech last night... $406 later...He had to replace the fan, which sounded like a jet plane taking off, he had to re-solder countless solder joints, he replaced a bunch of bad resistors, and replaced the power tubes. Now before anyone goes freaking out about replacing the tubes, he didn't try to rip me off. He told me he tested the tubes and they were at about 15-20% distortion and he RECOMMENDED that I replace them, but I didn't have to if I didn't want to. I figured I would because they are 10 years old and once I relaxed them, I'd pretty much have a brand new amp, so that's what I did.

I brought it immediately to our practice space, hooked everything up, and I swear to you the second I hit the first note, my life changed forever. I have NEVER heard such amazing tone, EVER! This is the first time I've ever owned a tube amp and I totally get it now, there is no replacement for actual tubes, my lord did it sound amazing. Also, I don't know who in their right mind can say that this thing isn't loud enough, I had the gain around 230 and I couldn't get the master past 9'o clock without tearing my own face off with sound waves. I know it's an age old argument, but there HAS TO BE some truth to the "tube watts are louder than SS watts argument. My 7pro is 1000 watts and using the same 810, I have crank my 7 pro to around noon to get the same volume I was getting at 9 ' o'clock with the SVT.

So yeah, that's it, I have found my tone and the search is over, VeganThump out... (drops mic and walks off stage)

^^^THIS is why I play through all-tube amps. Oh, I have had my share of SS rigs, lots of them, but nothing, and I mean NOTHING compares to the real deal. I sure don't like the weight, but that tone and that feel when playing through an all-tube amp is, IMO, what bass is all about.

Welcome to the tonefully blissful world of tube amps!

And sorry to hear about the mishaps with shipping of your amp. It amazes me how many people have no clue on how to properly package a heavy item. They must have skipped class when "inertia" was being taught.

It really was like a revelation, I mean I hate to sound like a tool or exaggerate but it really was almost a religious experience to me. It's just mind blowing the difference of sound and feel as compared to solid state amps.

Some people don't hear it. That's the part that blows me away. To my ear, the tone is like night and day compared to SS. Night and day. Same with the loudness.

Congrats on your acquisition. Calm down. The amp probably needed the work anyway. Now it is in spec, and ready to for your use. Be careful though, with all that power and tone. SVT's should be used only for Good. Never for Evil. :ninja:
