Double Bass Nails & metal hardware in neck joints

Any kind of metal hardware in neck joints always gets some folks pretty worked up around here. For a little perspective, here are the scars from the four (!!!!) original nails placed inside an extremely expensive Stradivari violin by old Tony himself back in the day....

I've never had such an instrument, but I am aware of relatively modern decent mandolins and guitars that utilize metal in neck joints... James, do you encounter them often in your work?

I've always loved how there are two giant philips head screws right in the fingerboard of the 16th fret of the Taylor 'Big Baby' guitars.

These are killer sounding and playing guitars too, for the size and cost.

It even works on people. Nothing wrong with it. I have titanium screws in my left leg.

Yup, I've got 3 titanium screws and a plate in my neck, C3-C5 fusion.

I think in the patient above, the bolts are more for something like a very high power Tens unit. Mine don't show like that at all.

The bolts are for connecting a Tesla coil.

I bought a Big Baby (US) for my daughter when she was in High School. Yes, they have a good sound. She was picking up guitar quickly. She met mr. pah-rum-pah-pum-pum and decided to sell the guitar and learn to pound the bass drum in the marching band. sigh

I have heard that when you run into those screws, you should go mix vodka with milk of magnesia…

Supposedly that is a “Philips screwdriver…”

Haven't tried it myself…I only have the tool steel variety.
