Double Bass Nanny & Mengoli etude books

Hi all,

Does anyone here have any experience of the following etude books:

Mengoli:20 concert studies
Nanny:20 etudes de virtuosite
Nanny:10 etudes caprices?

I'm looking for a book of technically challenging studies to help knock my left hand into shape in terms of agility/strength but without simandl-like repetition of the same scale/arpeggio pattern. (I can do that when i'm practicing my scales) Thanks

The Nanny 10 etude caprices are great. I went through all ten this past year with John Hood. There are a lot of double stop sections that work wonders for intonation and hand position. I would definitely try to find a teacher to help guide you through them though. They're are a lot of technical and musical issues that I would not have realized without a good teacher.

You can check out Petracchi's website. I know that excerpts of his edition of Mengoli are up. Having a look should give you a good idea as to whether you are ready for them.

Thanks to all who've replied so far. I'm currently with a very good teacher who is really encouraging me to challenge myself as much as possible, and as she wants me to get hold of some new stuff, i thought these books sounded like a good idea.

I'm currently working on the Nanny 20 Etudes de Virtuosite....I'm up to #4.

So far, I've enjoyed them. Lots of scalar passages (He liked G major) interspersed with some big jumps. Lots of transition into and out of thumb position. They will definitely help with your endurance.

The Mengoli etudes are some real ball busters. I'd say if you decide to try your hand at them, it would be best done with close guidance from your teacher.

Hello. I write from Italy. I study with Maestro Petracchi in Cremona at "W.Stauffer Academy", and his attention for Caimmi and Mengoli studies is enormous, also because he cares a lot about the Italian School.

Mengoli wrote wonderful studies, which Bottesini found "too difficult for my capacities...". He teached even in Pesaro, at the "G.Rossini" Conservatory, where I've studied, and there, in the bibliotheque, there is lots of material about him, even not edited (duets, etc...)
Many of these studies are melodic and virtuosistic, but each of them let you work on several difficulties.
The most wanted are th 1st ant the 5th, but also the 2nd, the 10th, and the 12th are "famous".

I highly recommend Mengoli. They are really useful for your right and your left hands. And some of them can really improve your musicianship.

Im going to go ahead and buy the Nanny etudes caprices, I read on the site Link Removed that they should be a challenge enough! However, if anyone else has anything more to say about any of these etudes it would be very welcome.
