NBD 1958 Fender Precision

FedEX just dropped off this beauty and my jaw dropped when I first saw her and picked her up. Refinished, re-fretted 15 years ago, replaced pick-up is a SD vintage, but everything else is original (including the chrome covers in the case pocket). Was since stored in a collector’s climate controlled storage. I am the first one to play her since re-birth. She sings and growls and barks … I’m in love! My first Precision bass.

Wow - that's nice! The resto really makes that thing look like a time capsule, and i'm sure with that level of attention, it has to be a great player. Very cool!

I'll also say i love the alembics. That very dark-topped series sitting behind the jazz looks right up my alley. Narrower string spacing?

Also cool to see a couple manouche guitars!

That's a very nice selection of instruments. Congratulations

Great looking bass, they play like a dream and have an especially nice neck profile and radius. They have a tone quality that’s unique to the 57-59 basses. I think it comes partly from the frets inlayed directly into top surface of the neck, without a fingerboard combined with the way pickups were made in the 50’s. Welcome to the club.

It's going to be hard to play, right?

Yes indeed very narrow string spacing. The neck only tapers from 1.5” at the nut to 2” at the 24th fret. Poses its unique set of challenges with some techniques, but undeniable advantages for others.

That’s awesome but I’m REALLY interested in those gypsy jazz boxes you have. Tell me about those!
The left one is an ALD LaBrune, top model of the famed French luthiers Gerald Alonso and Fabian Le Dosseur—cedar top, maple neck, and stunning Macassar ebony back and sides. That one is actually now for sale. The one on the right is a 1940’s Busato Selmer model made from bird’s eye maple with spruce top. Both are fantastic guitars with very unique voices.
