NBD! 2015 Gibson SG Standard

Honestly, with the way prices seem to be going, I'd probably spend a little more and go with a used Standard, and a 2015 would be my preference. It's got the upgraded bridge (I have the same bridge on my EB14, and it's far more solid than the normal Oil Rig version on the pre-2015 SG's) and the added inlays and body finish give it a bit more bling. Plus factor in the added things that was posted prior. I'm almost positive that the 2015 Standard was also Plek'd at the factory, which probably explains how @ThinCrappyTone is able to achieve a lower action with it. On the other hand, the Special/Faded models have that "already worn" feeling on the back of the neck.

It's crazy, but the Special was $760 new, and used they're going for between $650-$900, while the Standard was $1600 new, and used they seem to be going for $750-$900.

agree... i was looking for a used Special, and was bummed to see how expensive they were. Then a gentleman on cl was selling this standard for $800 and it was a no brainer. crazy

• Is lighter
• Has a smooth matte finish that feels great, and is less prone to friction than the high gloss Standard

In summary I would say that both of these instruments are awesome. They play and sound very similar to each other. But the 2015 Standard definitely feels like a subtle quality upgrade. Which makes sense, because it was literally 2x the cost new. Though I have to say I really love the feel of the satin matte nitro finish on the Special. And I love the look of them both equally. I really dig the matte satin Fireburst that is starting to relic naturally. And of course the high gloss finish with the grain showing and pearl inlays is pretty killer as well.

I even notice a difference between my two specials. Guess I got lucky with the fireburst in that the body appears to be a single slab instead of a two piece. It's also heavier than the chocolate one. The painted neck on the fireburst feels different than the chocolate one,smooth just a different kind of smooth. Fireburst finish seems to be thicker than the chocolate. The chocolate has more thump. I can get almost Tbird tones out of the fireburst with the right string on it. The chocolate has a growly thump that I absolutely love.

The chocolate one I bought new it was $738,I think lol,it was $7 something. I'll have to dig out The receipt. The Fireburst I lucked out on and got if from a guy who got it as a gift but said he couldn't get used to the short scale for $550. He had it for a month. I see the prices of them now and I'm glad I got them when I did. All Gibson bass prices seem to be going through the roof.

Yes, he was an SG bass guy, at least for a time! Well they were called different things then (EB series), but same basic thing... shape, short scale, now with newer pickups and some other minor enhancements. Never played the vintage ones, but from what I understand, they have a different tone... darker, from what I have been told. Always loved JB's tone, and this definitely gets you there!

I love his SG gibson , But the real deal is was his fretless warwick he used after cream , that thing is amazing!
