NBD: '73 Fender P w/ A neck

Beefy and sleek is a great way to put it. The neck has narrowness of a jazz, but some meat to grab onto. All of the jazz basses I've owned were not fenders, so question: is this a jazz neck with a precision decal or is this something else?

Good question. Certainly the lack of blocks and/or binding meant they were not going to be bolted on a Jazz, but I don't know if they were finished-out with more "meat". My '75 A certainly has a deeper "grip" than any contemporary Fender Jazz I've owned or played.

they're definitely out there if you look around. my '73 was in really good shape too. i sold it about a year ago and kinda regret it now.

It's a Precision neck, just with a 1.5" nut. They're actually somewhat common in this era (I've owned 2 '73 A neck Ps). All the Jazz necks in the '70s (from mid '66 - early '80s) had binding and block markers, so this was always intended to be a Precision neck.

It's a Precision neck, just with a 1.5" nut. They're actually somewhat common in this era (I've owned 2 '73 A neck Ps). All the Jazz necks in the '70s (from mid '66 - early '80s) had binding and block markers, so this was always intended to be a Precision neck.

That's what I figured... I've been digging it a lot.

Headband (John) and I did a trade deal for his '73 Fender P with an A neck. I've wanted one of these for a long time and they just don't appear in the classifieds very often. So, when I saw this one, I jumped.

The one that I should of kept!!!

I knew if I looked at Talkbass long enough I would come across a '73 P bass.
Bought new in '73 after I spent a few months building my parents new house. It was a gift from my mother for working. I was 18.

For decades at gigs I would see the salesman from Long & McQuade Vancouver who sold me the bass in the audience dancing with ladies. He passed away a couple of years ago.

With the case you have, exactly the same bass! My first 'great' bass and played a lot, then sat unused for about 4 years. Like a fool I then sold it for $200. It had a cool plastic rear cover for protection. I bet nobody here has seen those covers!

Lesson for you young guys, don't sell your first really good bass ....ever!
