NBD: '82 Black Walnut Precision Special

I just got this yesterday after hiding it from the wife on layaway since November......

Upon picking it up from the UPS store, I noticed initially that it was lighter than I expected..most of the info I've gathered on these basses led me to believe that they're all pretty heavy for the most part, so much so that the uncomfortable weight is mostly the reason the ones I've seen have come up for sale...this is quite a bit lighter than my '73 Jazz, which is about eleven and a half pounds....my guess is about nine...I just got a little time to check it out last night after the Wizards game and take a few crappy camera phone pics this morning

From.the little time.I've spent with it so far, I can say that it has the nicest neck I've ever played on a Fender, one of the best I've played period...the action is quite amazing....I really dig the passive tone on this one...classic P with added focus....I'm pondering throwing the flats I have on my other P to see what happens, but I'm still exploring with the new rounds it came with...active also was interesting...honestly still trying to feel it out...it's not the best, but I do think it complements the bass and adds to its vibe...I'll really dig in later this evening...

I love the neck on mine. I put TI flats on it shortly after it showed up and they're still there. That was probably 12 years ago. I also prefer the passive tone. Congrats on a great and rare find.

Thanks indeed...I'm told there aren't too many of these around...I feel very fortunate to have found one for myself...

That is true. I've seen various numbers thrown around over the years but I believe less than 200 were produced. Hard to believe they're now over 30 years old.

I picked up my 82 a few weeks ago. Original guts are long gone. Heavy as hell but the tone is awesome and I totally agree about the neck. Super comfy.

EDIT: mine is ash-bodied.

No I did not....I did some real searching for this one...found it in Arroyo Grande, CA....

Mine probably weighs about 10 lbs. Not light, but definitely not a boat anchor.

To ber fair, I'm using a somewhat suspect bathroom scale...I'd say it nine and a half pounds at the most....
