The tone is one of the reasons I've kept these basses on my radar. With the tone rolled off on the bass and the amp settings right, the tone from the neck pickup sounds astoundingly like the neck pickup on the vintage 6072: fat, round, and pillowy. Very mellow; not edgy at all. I would not be surprised if, in a blindfold test, listeners could not tell the difference. And the necks are more manageable. And, like on the vintage Gretsches but unlike on anything else I have played, these Moderne basses give me four plucking strikepoints along the string that yield usable tones.
Now if Gretsch had put the same pickups and electronics in the reissue G6072 as in the vintage 6072 and given it the same finish, THAT would be a bass!
