NBD! (and I don't like it)

Actually I bought this last month...

I've been looking for the right bass to drop in a NOS set of Lane Poor pickups I've been holding on to for years. I was on Reverb and spotted this. Spector NS Pulse 5-string. Looked good. Wasn't too expensive. True, it wasn't a USA or Euro Spector but it's still a Spector, it's going to be good.

The trouble is, it turns out I just don't like it. That's what you get when you shop online.

Some specs:
: 3-piece sandblasted ash body
: 3-piece roasted maple bolt-on neck
: 24 fret Macassar ebony fingerboard
: 35" scale
: Spector locking bridge, ~16.65mm string spacing
: EMG 40DC pickups
: Spector Tone Pump Jr 9v preamp. Vol/Vol/Bass boost/Treble boost

What I don't like: The string spacing. It's super tight and it's uncomfortable to play. My Ibanez 5 string has a slightly smaller 16.5mm spacing but somehow it feels wider than the Spector.

I don't like the large gap between the G string and the body caused by the curved body. I'm expecting my fingers to touch the body but they get air. instead. It's weird and uncomfortable and I don't like it.

I don't like the preamp. The bass is a gain monster. I have 2 different amps (SWR Workingman combo and Fender Bassman 500 head + cab) and even when using the padded inputs this bass clips the input with preamp flat and minimal volume. Super super hot bass! The preamp is noisy and hissy and muddy sounding. I can not get a tone I like from this bass. None of that Spector growl, just tubby low end farts and harsh scraping highs.

The thing I least like, and what soured the bass for me from the start is in that last photo. The big gouge in the fretboard at the second fret. You can't see it in that picture, but it's also scratched from under the fret, wrapping around the B-string side of the board. The scratch on top is causing chipping and flaking on the board. I can slide the blade of a screwdriver or a fingernail under it.
This bass was sold on Reverb as brand new & factory/mint condition from a reputable music store and a top tier Spector dealer, so I expected they would have decent customer service and take it back as a return. Wrong. They claimed the scratched and chipped fingerboard was just excess glue runoff from the fret that would easily wipe off if I bothered to try. That is NOT glue. Reverb customer service took my side and instructed the seller to provide a prepaid shipping label within X amount of days. They did not and blocked me on Reverb. So now I'm stuck with this stupid thing.

I don't know how you would be stuck with it. If they don't give you that label then reverb owes you a refund. If you were to take some clear acrylic nail sealer to that chip in the fretboard it'll help to not make it worse or possibly harm your hand in that spot. Good luck man, that's a good looking Spector aside from the obvious bummers.

You should share who this is. I buy from reverb and I wouldn't want to buy from this dealer if that is how they operate.

Agree with @Lammchop93 you should file a credit card/paypal dispute.

Good Luck!

Sorry to hear what happened when buying on reverb, makes me think twice about using them. Seller was able to block you, could you not still contact reverb's help center or customer service after they said they were on your side? Please share who you bought from, definitely won't buy anything from them. Goodluck.

Sorry that happened to you. I agree that you should dispute with the credit card ASAP.

Good luck with all the hassle to come. Now that you're blocked, is there any way to leave feedback?

Reverb protects their high volume sellers.
I've had a bad experience or two and wasn't even able to leave negative feedback.
I didn't look at Bizarre guitars feedback but I've seen sellers that have hundreds of thousands of feedback and 5 stars on their profile, once you click the feedback about every page has multiple complaints or issues

This mirrors exactly what happened to me on ebay. I received a very expensive bass from GuitarChimp https://guitarchimp.com. He has a very high feedback rating on eBay and Reverb.

Anyway I got the bass checked over by my guitar tech who provided me a report to say truss rod is not working on a bowed neck. I passed this on to GuitarChimp and raised a case. They offered a refund and said they would send a postage label. It never happened and all went silent for 2 weeks. Then eBay suspended my account and closed the case in his favour, even though I provided them with an official report from my tech. Absolutely no chance of arguing my case. The whole thing has been surreal. I had plenty of positive feedback myself but that didn't matter a jot!

It is clear they protect high volume sellers with good feedback. I went direct to GuitarChimp and he has completely ignored my emails. So I am in the middle of a credit card dispute now.

I love that GuitarChimp are on YouTube promoting their ads but behind that facade is something different.

I'm really surprised Reverb has let this go. I've had one bad incident with a seller, Absolute Pro Music, who sent me 50' instrument cables instead of the speaker cables I ordered. It became a big deal when they accused me of keeping the cables instead of returning them even though I had a receipt from FedEx showing the weight and that "Chico" had signed for them. Reverb credited my account instead of making APM refund the money. The drama with APM continued but I got my refund. Who uses 50' instrument cables, anyway?
