I think this is the 2nd time I’ve posted a NBD since I’ve been on Talkbass, and there’s been a few NBD the past couple of years but just the usual FSO ..lol.
Today I received a Cort/Elrick NJS 5, which I’ve been anxious to get my hands on since they were announced.
I’ll cut right to the chase!
First off the pros:
I’m a sucker for black and maple with blocks, it’s a nice looking instrument. The 35” neck feels comfy to me, no protruding frets, although they could use a shine.
I tuned up and plugged in DI/Mixer powered speaker. I won’t go into too much details on the tone, it sounds like an active alder jazz bass, nice mids, good slap tone, the bridge pickup has nice burp when soloed. I’m sure this bass will sit nice in a live band situation.
Some cons:
If you even breathe on the bass you’ll have swirling on the finish.
The eq knobs feel cheap, the volume does basically nothing for almost 3/4 of the taper.
But what really bugged me was access to the battery and controls. Good luck getting the covers off with out scratching the back of the body. I used a small screwdriver I have for working on glasses to pry the battery cover off and then the control cover. It was a PITA. This needs to be addressed, it’s not a $400 bass, a pop out battery compartment should be standard.
I’ll be experimenting with strings the next few days, not a fan of the ubiquitous XL’s.
