NBD: Custom EGC 500 - All Aluminum!

And yeah, it is strung with Chromes... I've used Chromes on every bass I've owned for the past 4 years or so, as I've always shot for a low, grindy tone with a blanketed top end. Well I feel doing that with the EGC kind of handicaps the tone, plus this .105 E string does not want to cooperate in Drop C, and I decided with Supervoid I want to shoot for that Stingray-like mix cutting tone that rounds will do a better job with. The A D and G strings tuned G-C-F sound great, but the low C is kind of muddy and undefined, and missing that aluminum zing the other 3 strings have.

It did ok through my practice amp, but once I played it through the big boy amp I didn't really like what was going on. Kevin told me the string is simply too small. I've got a .124 drop tuning set of Circle K's on the way. Very excited to hear how it sounds with those, as I think the aluminum tone combined with Circle K's tonal description of their strings is gonna put me exactly where I want to be.

I bought a 5-string balanced .136 set of Circle K strings. They shipped 1.25 hours after I put in the order on the website!

I got the strings pretty quick, 2 days I think. But the bass is still under construction, so I haven't had a chance to use them. I'm interested to hear yours!

Have you tried amping up the Rickenbacker after playing the egc? I found the pickups so hot that it's perfect if you have the one bass but if you need to use another bass then you need to eq the amp different to match the tone.

The Bean i have is already hot with the pickups but either i need to get new pickups from egc or get another egc to match the volume and bottom ect.

Hmm. My Ric is kind of high output for a Ric to begin with, but the EGC is so tonally different that I have to tweak everything a bit, yeah. I expected that though.

Still waiting on my Circle K rounds to show up, but I found the sweet spot with the Chromes on it. Bridge pickup solo'd in single coil mode with the tone knob wide open, sounds absolutely fantastic. Really glad I had him put the coil tap in.

Bass sounds great with the Circle Ks. Ended up using this bass straight into my Orange TB1000 to record all of my bass tracks for our upcoming full length. Very impressed by how it sounded in a recording setting.

Have you ever strung it up with the lower 4 strings of a 5 string set for your drop C tuning? Just a though if you want all of the strings to be tight.

I've actually done that before. No need for that here though. The Drop Tuning .124 Circle K's work perfect!
