They are great instruments at original price of $499, but a real steal at $299, and may even go down in the next 45 days. I had bought a Dean EMG 4 string Edge (not HZ, real deal EMG pickups) from MF a few months ago. Original price on it was $499, has grover tuners, graphite nut, 5 piece neck. It's bolt on and basswood, but sounds great. MF started them at $299, then went down multiple times: to $279, then $249, then $219. I got the difference credited back and bought a 2nd one. Tempted to get same with these models of J and P in different colors with the rosewood instead of maple fret boards. I am such an opportunist. I like to get while the getting is good.

Thanks for thinking of me but it's 3 years later. The LTD is long gone and I've got a custom 35" Telebass in the works.

If I had not bought six of these things, I would buy a couple more. Incredible basses for that mo ey. Just a silly deal actually.

Oh wow, I didn't realize they had been reduced for that long. They do seem like a great deal - Tusq nut, 22 fret, 5 yr warranty. Might have to see if I can scrape the $ together...

Seeing this continual closeout, I wonder if Squier has pretty much nailed down the market for name-brand, low and low-mid priced P and J clones. Some observations:
-The Dean Juggernaut and Paramount seem to have not taken off at all.
-The ESP LTD 214 and 204 basses (despite being priced the same or less than Squire) were unable to get traction despite years of trying. They're trying again with the slightly modernized AP-204 models, but I've never seen one in a store.
-Ibanez and Peavey have some Fender inspired stuff (Talman and Millenium) at the low end, but have clearly put their own spin on body and headstock shapes to make them look much less Fender'ish than some of the instruments they've done in the past.
-Yamaha has the BB's, but those have always been their own particular twist.
-Schechter still has some Fenderey models but nothing under 5 bills.
Just my limited perspective, but it looks to me like Fender took aim at the low-end clones (at least from the big names) and really conquered.

I'm sure they're great and from the pictures it looks like my ideal neck profile, but the weight is a deal breaker and my much-modded MIM (also has a shallow neck) more than fills the P-need. A couple of years ago I would have bought a Paramount just-because, but those days are over and I don't miss them.
